What is mold?
Mold is everywhere and used for a variety of everyday things like cheese, penicillin, beer, bread, and all medications ending in mycin.  Mold is also the "bio" in biodegrade and the largest of the four kingdoms of earth.  For all the good it does mold can be equally harmful to your health. Allergies, Type 1 Hypersensitivity and, in extreme cases, memory loss and nervous system damage.  


However, once mold is discovered it then becomes potentially dangerous to your health as well as your home or business.  Mold slowly digests building materials releasing spores and MVOC's (microbial volatile organic compounds) as it grows.  Spores and MVOC's have the same attributes as the host colony which makes cleanup difficult.  Colonies 10-30 sq ft or more should be handled by professionals. 


Toxic molds, often called "black" due their color, release mycotoxins that can affect the occupants health if exposed for long periods.  Stachybotrys or "Black Mold" is the toxic variety and is found in less than 2% of homes with mold issues.  Mold destroys your home and also your health, action should be  taken the moment a colony is discovered.  Toxic mold is not always found on tests due to the mold being a "wet" colony.  Testing may only be effective if the mold colony is dry.  There is no reason to allow mold growth, toxic or otherwise, to continue in your due to a number of concerns.  


By far the biggest concern with mold in your home is the health and safety of the occupants.  Toxic molds like Stachybotrys Chartarum mentioned above can cause anything from allergy type symptoms to memory-loss and respiratory illness.  Toxic molds are given somewhat of a bad rap, they are just protecting their food source from other molds.  However, the same mycotoxin that stunts other species' growth will adversely affect any humans or animals in the home.

Testing can help reveal hidden and destructive mold colonies but it does not tell you why its growing.  Mold remediation or removal is the only way to successfully rid your home of elevated mold and mildew.

Can I just use a home remedy or bleach?​

While you can find 100 home remedies on the web about cleaning up mold contamination it really comes down to is how effective they are vs how safe they are.  Just the same as pest control or working on your car.  You may be able to use a household cleaner to remove surface mold but if you want to be sure...really, really sure, hire a professional.
